Treats of popcorn were handed out to all the Veterans that came in for care at the Out-Patient Clinic.  It's not much but it's always the thought that counts.  They were all happy to know that someone is thinking of them.  Georgina LeBlanc from Pierre Part is now the Associate Representative and seeing that their needs are met at the clinic and is there on Thursday mornings.  Dean Cancienne, a representative also of the Auxiliary, volunteers on Thursday mornings and serves cookies.

The American Legion Post 16 Family hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Plaza located at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center.  Some of the distinguished guests were:  Archbishop Philip Hannan, Parish President Kevin Davis, Covington Mayor Candace Watkins, Covington City Police Captain Richard Palmisano, 40&8 Grande Chef de Gare de la Louisianne Monsieur Terry Sharp and Louisiana Army National Guard SFC Richard McSpaddin.  A Patriotic Musical Tribute was performed by Woodlake Elementary School's 3rd grade students directed by Music Teacher Kelly Stomp.  After the Veterans Day Ceremony the Post 16 Honor Guard held a prayer ceremony at the gravesite of our American Legion Post 16 namesake, Robert H. Burns at Covington No. 1 Cemetery.

The Robert H. Burns, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 of Covington participated in the recent American Education Week by delivering 114 dozen doughnuts to teachers’ lounges in 20 area schools.  A total of 1,368 doughnuts were delivered.  Pictured at Folsom Elementary School, left to right:  Unit 16 President Millie Fitzmorris, 1st grade teacher and Auxiliary member Ollie McGillivary, Assistant Principal Lelia Parker and Unit 16 Education Chairman Martha Dutsch.

We had a great crowd with plenty of food, music, games, presents and fun.  In lieu of presents, everyone was asked to donate at least $5 for needy families.  The response was great.  We collected in excess of $400.  Thanks to all our Legion and Auxiliary members that made this event an overwhelming success.

Pictured above are all of the volunteers that attended.  The money donated for the bingo games was more than $600.  After the games the residents were treated to refreshments.  There were approximately 35 residents in attendance.  Units represented were 47, 248, 416 and 502.

On Saturday morning at 8:00 am, the American Legion National Commander Clarence Hill visited Robert H Burns Post 16.  After a filling breakfast of eggs, sausage, S.O.S. and grits the National Commander spoke on the need to get the word out about the American Legion using Internet tools, i.e., Blogs, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  These tools help us connect and share with the people in your life what is important to us.  He also spoke on many items of interest to Veterans including the writing of Resolutions by local Posts.  Accompanying the National Commander was his aide Larry White, American Legion Department Commander Ken "Doc" Lefleur, and the LA Secretary of Veterans Affairs Lane Carson.

Through the sponsorship of the Robert H. Burns, American Legion Family Post/Unit 16 of Covington, Brooke Eleana Hingle, a senior who attends Covington High School, is one of 54 students nationwide who was recently awarded a National Scholarship to attend the American Legion Auxiliary’s “Americanism Youth Conference.”  She was chosen by National Headquarters on the basis of her individual student profile and essay entitled “Civic Education...Why It’s Important To Me.”  She will serve as one of the six Louisiana delegates chosen to attend this conference.  Unit 16 President Millie Fitzmorris and Post 16 Commander Mike Peats presented Brooke Hingle financial assistance for her journey.
